You know what's the saddest thing of finding a new old show?
You fall like a fool for a ship that is no longer that active and now you have a fanfic deficiency.

Like, I don't think this is profoundly feminist or even deep, but I want to write a sci-fi novel that gives older sexist male sci-fi fans the exact experience of being a nerdy teenage girl and reading a Larry Niven novel.
Like, it's not even that it was a failure of progressivism, the way those novels treated women, it's just that you get halfway or less into all these novels and realize that the author is truly incapable of being normal about women, that the aliens are more human than the women in this man's inner world.
I want to create the equivalent for grown-ass men who like Warhammer and Dune. A novel that leaves a forty-five year old libertarian Heinlein fan like... well, that's an amazing vision of the future, but why does the author think I'm... icky?

One of the main reasons why I silently freak out so much after talking to people in a group setting is because I listen to them (or at least try to act like I’m listening to them) but the very instant I open my mouth to speak, they start talking to someone else, or someone else talks right fucking over me even though they know I‘m trying to speak. Every. Single. Time.
And it’s not just so-called “neurotypical” people. Oh no. It’s neurodivergent people too. And the neurodivergent people I understand; but they also have to understand that not all of us are fast talkers and some of us need people to be patient or we will never get our information out. My brain-to-mouth processing speeds are extremely extremely slow and I cannot talk quickly to save my life unless I am reciting something I already have memorized. If someone cuts me off in any way before I am finished, my brain gets stuck in a buffering mode for three seconds at the very least, and more if they continue to cut me off when I’m trying to communicate “No that’s not the end of what I’m saying and that’s not what I even meant by that. Stop making hasty generalizations about a point you haven’t even heard through yet.”
But no matter who I am talking to, right before I am able to finish my extremely well-thought-out point that I’ve been formulating in my head for months or years prior in the mirror, I always, without fail get cut off because everyone gets impatient with my long pauses and doesn’t even want to attempt to listen to what I have to say because they think what they’re about to say in reaction is more important. And it’s not like I’m taking over the conversation or talking more than I listen; I’m just taking more time than they are comfortable with to say a typical amount of words.
And then those same people always tell me, in a somewhat patronizing tone, “You’re so quiet! You’re such a good listener!” Yes because that’s what you’ve made me. Why should I talk to you if you won’t fucking listen to me for three seconds. And no, after a certain point I stopped listening to you because why should I listen to you if you don’t ever listen to me?
Everyone’s nice to me and says they want me there at their social functions but they still subtly exclude me. God damn.
I suppose they want to look at me, or perhaps inhale my aroma. Like I’m a house plant.

Can someone please tell me where to find all the Star Trek TNG slash fic? It's a 30-year-old series in the father of all fic franchises, there's GOTTA be more than is just on Ao3.
Like you can't expect me to believe that there are only 71 explicit DaForge fics in existence out there. Folks were writing that shit before they had internet!!! Come on!!

I was checking on the quality of an old Earth Final Conflict I had on the computer and one of the episodes included what appears to be a [then] SciFi Channel ad break featuring Star Trek Enterprise, Smallville, Roswell, whose central theme appears to be explosions in and around cornfields...
No I think it's the uploader's actual library of ripped works (I didn't notice the logos at the bottom, Space followed by TNT). That's hilarious.

This is from Star Trek Wholesome Posting on Facebook.
And because it's a FAQ, here's the story of The Infamous Clown Sweater, as I told someone who asked there:
"I did this fundraiser for EFF in San Francisco in ... 2001? 2002? Something like that. It was at DNA Lounge, and after we were done, this person came up to me with this horrific sweater (jumper, for you non-Americans). They told me it was part of The Infamous Clown Sweater Project. What's that, I asked. They told me they are getting as many people as possible to wear it and pose for a photo, which they would then upload to their webpage -- not website, webpage, because it was 2001 or so -- for all to see.
"Of *course* I was down for it, and that face I'm making in the first photo is my very real reaction to the _awful_ stank that was just infused in the acrylic fibers.
"The second picture is from a con about ... 2014? Something like that, based on how I look. Someone actually made their own version of that horrible sweater for me. One arm is too long, on purpose, the neck is all stretched out, on purpose, and it fits poorly, on purpose. It's so damn funny to me, and it came along at a moment when we were doing this "then and now" thing on Twitter (before the fascists took over).
"I still have the second sweater. I have no idea what happened to the original. Last time I checked, the website that hosted all those pictures -- so old it was manually coded in html, predating even Flickr -- was lost to the sands of time.
"But it never fails to make me smile when this picture comes back around. It reminds me of a specific time, when there was just so much hope for the online future we were all building."
And for those of you who are too young to know what Riker giving Wesley his "fondest wish" is, well ...
Tumblr media
Wesley wanted to grow up to be a blue-eyed blond who I'm pretty sure the costume designer wanted to fuck?
Tumblr media
GEORDI! You're not helping!
Look. I love you, Commander Riker, but ... you're gonna want to try again. Wesley's fondest wish rhymes with "marathon betazoid orgy on risa".

I wrote this article for my monthly Tolkien fandom studies column, Cultus Dispatches as part of the OTW's "ten things about fandom" challenge for International Fanworks Day. Normally, my Cultus column begins with a gnarly soup of data, and I often don't even know what (if anything!) will come out of analyzing it. This month, due to the relative lack of data, I thought I was giving myself an easy month of writing. I just needed to come up with ten things, right?? Ha! I think this might be the most challenging article I've written for this column to date.
Here are some fun facts I learned while researching these 10 Important Moments in Tolkien Fanfic History:
Tolkien fanfic is older than Star Trek fanfic.
The first known Tolkien fanfic was an alternate-history Sauron redemption fic.
The first Tolkien fanfic archive was a slash archive.
Three out of four archives opened after the LotR films left theaters used the eFiction open-source script.
The first Angbang story was posted in 2002 (though it wasn't called Angbang yet).
Want to know more? Go read the article! And I'd love to hear what I didn't include that you'd add to your own list. (Or if you make your own list, let me know!)
Many, many thanks to all of the people who talked with me about their work for this article and to those involved in the discussion on the SWG Discord's #fandom-studies channel about this topic.
